  • A reception was held Friday evening at the Social House in Carmi to honor Sandra Mears' 50 years of service to the Conger & Elliott Law Offices as a legal secretary.
And, no, it wasn't a retirement party, Mears was quick to point out.
Mears resides in Carmi with her husband, Bill. They have a daughter and son-in-law, Brian and Kim Coy, who reside in Evansville, Ind., with their sons, Williams and Dale.
Mears told The Times at the well-attended reception Friday evening she still enjoys her work at the law office and has no intention of retiring.
"I really enjoy meeting the clients and being able to help them," she said. "The most important attribute a law office employee can have is integrity. I cannot repeat in public the things I hear in the office. Our entire staff is professional and integrity is very important to us all."
Mears went to work at the law office with no formal training. She learned as she went from the attorneys who worked in the office at the time: Ivan Elliott Sr., Ivan Elliott Jr. and C. William Fechtig. Mike Drone and Greg Stewart are the firm's current attorneys and other office employees include Kari Williams, Carrie Sanders and Jerry Richards.
She said she enjoys working with all the staff and, as a testament to her lasting impression as well as her tenure, many former employees who have moved on over time were on hand Friday. Comments about Mears and the staff heard around the room among the many conversations included "good teacher," "busy office" and "professional atmosphere."
During her time, Mears said she has learned every aspect of operating the law office, with the one exception being bookkeeper, and she said she has not always been confident in her abilities to master new technologies that have come about over the years.
But, she has conquered the new machines, computers and phone systems introduced to her over the previous five decades.
One may reach the office at 382-4187.
