  • John R. Gustafson, 89, of Cambridge, died Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2013, at Unity Point-Trinity, Rock Island. A funeral service celebrating his life was held Monday, Dec. 9 at Cambridge Lutheran Church. The Rev. Randy Swanson officiated. Burial was in St. Anthony’s Cemetery, Atkinson, where military honors were accorded by the Don Cherry VFW Post No. 5083. A visitation was held Sunday, Dec. 8 at Vandemore Funeral Homes Ltd., Geneseo. Memorials may be made to the John R. Gustafson Memorial Fund.
    John was born on Aug. 27, 1924, in Osco, the son of Pontus and Ella (Julien) Gustafson. He graduated from Orion High School. He married Dolores Smith and later separated. He married Catherine F. Cauwels on Jan. 8, 1971, in Rock Island. Catherine died on Jan. 1, 2013. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was employed by International Harvester Works for 36 years as an inspector, retiring in 1981.
    John was a member of Cambridge Lutheran Church. He also was a member of the Vikings Club in Moline, American Legion and a charter member of Valley View Country Club, Cambridge. He loved fishing in Bagley, Wis. and spending the winters in Texas. He also enjoyed 10-pin bowling, golfing and his breakfast and coffee groups.
    Survivors include his daughter, Penny (Michael) Hayes of Erie; his sons, Kevin (Kristi) Gustafson of Moline; Lonnie Gustafson of Austin, Texas, and Marty (Lucia) Gustafson of Sterling; 10 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Catherine; and brother, Mahlon Gustafson.
