  • Gerald B. “Jay” Cowells, 85, of Bettendorf, Iowa, died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2013, at Unity Point-Trinity in Bettendorf. A memorial service celebrating his life was held Monday, Dec. 23 at Vandemore Funeral Homes and Cremation Services, Atkinson. Inurnment was in Liberty Cemetery in rural Atkinson. A visitation was held one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Gerald Cowells Memorial Fund.
    Jay was born on April 5, 1928, in Kewanee, the son of Frank and Sadie (VanDeVoorde) Cowells. He was a graduate of Atkinson High School and later served in the U.S. Army. He married Dorothy H. Holmquist on April 7, 1951, in Rock Island. Jay worked as an inspector and in quality assurance for John Deere Plow Planter Works for 32 years, from which he retired.
    Jay was very generous with volunteering his time to help sick family members and friends. He never knew a stranger and was friendly to all. He loved antiquing, woodworking and going to the casinos. He also enjoyed coaching the 10-year- old’s baseball team in Bettendorf for many years.
    Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; his daughter, Jaylene (Dan) Peterson of Bettendorf; granddaughter, Monica Adams of Milwaukee, Wis.; step-grandson, Orry (Chantelle) Peterson of Edgington; great grandchildren, Cali and Barrett; a sister, Joyce (Vern) Minnaert of Atkinson; numerous loved nieces and nephews; and a dear friend to Jay and Dorothy: Joann Crow of Rock Island. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Roy B. Cowells.
