  • The Geneseo varsity girls’ basketball team went 1-1 in tournament action this weekend with a win over Kankakee, but a loss to Yorkville.
    Geneseo vs. Kankakee
    The Lady Leafs earned their first win of the holiday tournament season in game two of the Ottawa Holiday Tournament, 53-26 over Kankakee Dec. 21.
    Kankakee took the first lead, 12-11 in the first quarter, but Geneseo grabbed the advantage at the half, 23-15 after the Lady Leafs outscored Kankakee, 12-3 in the second.
    The Lady Leafs knocked down 15 points in the third quarter and held Kankakee scoreless to go up 38-15. Geneseo sealed the victory in the fourth with 15 points to Kankakee’s 11.
    Audrey Anderson was the leading scorer for Geneseo with 12 points, knocking down five shots from the field and two free throws.
    Darci Dietrich added 10 points on four field goals and two free throws; while Rori Westerlund and Emily VandeWiele each scored seven points – Westerlund hit two field goals and a three pointer and VandeWiele drained three field goals and a free throw.
    Sydney Himmelman finished the contest with five points on two field goals and a free throw; followed by Anna Wise who went 4-for-5 from the line for her four points. Kaylie Piekos added three points on a field goal and a free throw; Molly DeBrock hit a three pointer for her three points, and Tarah Fisher scored two points on two free throws.
    Geneseo vs. Yorkville
    In the first game of the Ottawa Holiday Tournament, Geneseo was edged out 40-36 by Yorkville Dec. 20.
    Yorkville jumped out to a 10-8 lead in the first quarter, and went up 19-15 at the half after Yorkville scored nine points to Geneseo’s seven.
    Yorkville posted 12 points in the third quarter to Geneseo’s 10 for a 31-25 advantage. The Lady Leafs attempted to steal the win in the fourth quarter, but came up short as the girls only outscored Yorkville, 11-9.
    Anderson paced the Lady Leafs with 10 points as she knocked down four shots from the field and two free throws; while Wise put up eight points on four field goals.
    DeBrock and Dietrich chipped in seven points apiece – DeBrock with two field goals and three free throws and Dietrich with three field goals and a free throw. Piekos and Fisher finished the contest with two points apiece, both with a field goal.
    The Lady Leafs (4-7 overall) began play in the State Farm Classic Dec. 26 and with a win will play at 7:30 p.m. tonight, but with a loss will play at 11 a.m. today.
