  • The Geneseo varsity boys’ basketball team finished holiday tournament action with a 2-2 record in the Chuck Dayton Holiday Tournament.
    Geneseo vs. DeKalb
    The Leafs lost a close one that needed extra time to declare a winner Dec. 26 against DeKalb as the Barbs edged out the Leafs, 73-69 in overtime.
    DeKalb jumped out to a 17-7 lead in the first quarter, but Geneseo responded in the second to close the gap. The Leafs posted 22 points in the quarter to the Barbs’ 14 to give DeKalb a narrow, 31-29 advantage.
    The Barbs pulled ahead by 10 in the third, 48-38 after DeKalb outscored Geneseo, 17-9. The Leafs tied the game at 62-62 at the end of regulation after they posted 24 points in the fourth to DeKalb’s 14.
    In overtime, DeKalb scored 11 points and held Geneseo to seven for the win.
    Drew Himmelman led the way for the Leafs with 23 points as he knocked down nine shots from the field and five free throws; while Ethan Radue posted 16 points as he drained 6-of-7 from the free-throw line and five field goals.
    Cooper Humphries added 10 points as he hit two shots from beyond the arc and two field goals; followed by Greg Rusk with nine points off a three pointer, two field goals and two free throws.
    Jordan Mielke finished with four points on off a triple and a free throw; while Luke Snyder had three points on a field goal and a free throw, and Anthony Bravata and Kevin Wolak scored two points apiece, both with a field goal.
    Geneseo vs. Thornridge
    Behind double-digit efforts from Himmelman, Radue and Rusk, the Leafs notched another win in the Chuck Dayton Tournament Dec. 26, 62-55 over Thornridge in DeKalb.
    Himmelman led the charge with 22 points as he went 8-for-8 from the free-throw line and 7-of-10 from the field.
    Radue chipped in 17 points as he knocked down two triples, four shots from the field and three free throws; while Rusk posted 14 points as he drained three shots from beyond the arc, a field goal and three free throws.
    Bravata added six points on two treys; while Humphries scored two points on a field goal, and Snyder hit a free throw for his lone point of the game.
    Geneseo grabbed the 17-14 lead in the first quarter and extended its advantage to 31-22 at the half after the Leafs outscored Thornridge, 14-8 in the second quarter.
    The Leafs continued to hold onto their lead, 42-31 at the end of the third quarter as the Leafs scored 11 points to Thornridge’s nine. Thornridge won the fourth quarter as the squad outscored Geneseo by four, 24-20, but it wasn’t enough as Geneseo emerged with the win.

    Geneseo suffered a 54-35 loss in DeKalb Dec. 23 as the Leafs dropped is contest with Hinsdale South.
    Hinsdale led 14-11 at the end of the first quarter, but Geneseo tied the game at the half, 28-28 after the Leafs posted 17 points to Hinsdale’s 14.
    Hinsdale regained the lead in the third quarter as the squad outscored Geneseo, 12-5 for the 40-33 advantage. Hinsdale sealed the victory in the fourth quarter with 14 points and held Geneseo to only two.
    Leading the offensive effort for Geneseo was Himmelman with 15 points, hitting four shots from the field and seven free throws.
    Humphries drained two shots from beyond the arc for his six points; while Radue hit a three pointer and a field goal for his five points.
    Mielke finished the game with three points on a trey; while Wolak, Bravata and Josh Beard each scored two points, all with a field goal.
    Geneseo vs. Moline
    In their first game of the day at the Chuck Dayton Tournament Dec. 23, the Leafs knocked off Moline 59-45.
    The Leafs trailed 16-13 at the end of the first quarter, but outscored the Maroons, 14-4 in the second quarter to take control of the game at the half, 27-20.
    Geneseo held onto its advantage at the end of the third quarter, 39-31 after the Leafs scored 12 points to Moline’s 11. The Leafs earned the victory when they posted 20 points in the fourth quarter to Moline’s 14.
    Himmelman, Rusk and Snyder led the way for Geneseo, all three in double figures.
    Himmelman posted 17 points on six field goals and five free throws; followed by Rusk with 11 points as he drained two shots from beyond the arc and five free throws, and Snyder put up 10 on four shots from the field and two free throws.
    Radue chipped in eight points off a three pointer, a field goal and three free throws; while Bravata scored six points as he hit two triples.
    Mielke and Wolak both scored three points — Mielke with a three pointer and Wolak on a field goal and a free throw; while Humphries finished with one point on a free throw.
    The Leafs (6-8 overall and 0-2 in the NIB 12) will be back in action at 8:30 p.m. Jan. 4 on the road against Rock Falls.
