MARION — The Marion Junior High School boys basketball team improved to 9-1 with a 60-52 win over East St. Louis Lincoln Saturday afternoon in Marion.
The Wildcats led 15-13 after the first quarter and then outscored East St. Louis Lincoln 17-11 in the second quarter to stretch their lead to 32-24 at halftime.
Marion led 43-35 heading into the fourth quarter and held on to hand East St. Louis Lincoln (7-1) its first loss of the season and first loss in 25 games.
"We battled our butts off today," Marion coach Justin Barrington said. "We held them to one shot and out on defense and really competed on the defensive end."
Cole Schafer led Marion with 12 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks. Justin Saddoris added 14 points, Terrell Henderson had 13 points, David Fletcher and Nathan Cook both had eight and Jaden Lacy chipped in five points for the Wildcats, who went 18-for-25 at the free-throw line in the game.
Marion is scheduled to host Centralia at home Monday night, weather permitting.
