  • In the high-powered UT Kiwanis Invitational April 12, the Geneseo boys’ track and field team had three field athletes grab top honors. The Leafs, as a team, took home eighth.
“I thought we had strong efforts being our first outdoor meet of the season,” said head coach Don Fredericks. “The quality of the field was pretty impressive, but I am really happy with our efforts.
A.J. Marmion brought home a first-place finish in discus A with a distance of 162-03; while Anthony Bravata placed first in high jump C at 5-8; and Gage Sears finished first in high jump B as he cleared, 6-0.
“Highlights were A.J. in the discus with monster throw for so early in the season,” said Fredericks. “And our high jumpers, holy cow, Bravata and Sears won and Daniels got third. That was the top event of the meet.”
Tony Gatter placed second in the 3200-meter C run in 10 minutes and 59.77 seconds; while Nathan Soria took second in the 1600-m B run with a time of 4:45.80.
Marmion finished second in shot put A with a toss of 50-07; followed by Jordan Mielke in second in triple jump B with a leap of 41-0.
Chaise Blakley finished third in the 1600-m C run with a time of 4:46.41; while Will Daniels placed third in high jump A at 6-2, and Sears in triple jump C at 38-9.
The 4x800-m A relay of Soria, Griffin Welfer, Blakley and Mitchell Lamb took home fourth with a time of 8:42.20; while David Chenoweth placed fourth in the 3200-m A run in 10:19.15, and Daniels, fourth in the 110-m C hurdles in 18.56 and 300-m C hurdles in 45.19.
Jacob Verplaetse ended the day in fourth in pole vault C as he cleared 8-6, and Justin Cain took fourth in pole vault B at 11-0.
Rounding out the Top 5 finishes for the Leafs were: Nick Fox in fifth in the 3200-m B run in 10:38.85, and the 4x800-m B relay of Cayson Frerichs, Bravata, Luke Johnson and Gabe Johnson in fifth at 9:12.15.
Mitchell Lamb placed fifth in the 800-m A run with a time of 2:09.40; while August Stamp took fifth in the 400-m B dash in 54.30, and Josh Beard, fifth in the 400-m A dash at 54.32.
Chenoweth finished fifth in the 1600-m A run at 4:46.08; while Aaron Metcalf placed fifth in long jump C at 17-7 1/4.
“A lot of guys placed in a lot of events, but we were certainly far from full strength,” said Fredericks. “All that matters is we stay healthy and improve.”

“The biggest surprise of the season so far is Will Daniels going 6-5 in the high jump. He is off to a phenomenal start,” said Fredericks. “We also have Gage Sears in the high jump who cleared 6-2. Josh Beard is looking great in the triple jump, A.J. Marmion and Nick Verbeck in the throws, and Luke Snyder is helping a strong sprint core. We are pretty balanced across the board.”
The Leafs will be in action this weekend at the Galesburg ABC Meet at Knox College at 10 a.m. April 19.
