  • After four years at the helm of the Geneseo High School baseball program, head coach Steve Brucher has decided to step down.
“This was a very difficult decision, but one that needed to be made for both personal and family reasons,” said Brucher. “I need to spend a little more time with my own children and their activities, and a little less time with other peoples’ children and their activities. While I will continue to coach girls’ golf, stepping away from baseball will allow both my wife and I more opportunities to watch our children participate in their activities.”
Brucher took over the Leaf squad in the 2011 season where the team went 10-22.
In 2012, the Leafs went 20-17 and won the program’s first regional title, before going on to a 22-13 record the following season.
This past season, the Leafs set a new school mark for wins in a season with a record of 28-8-1. Geneseo also captured the program’s first conference championship in 16 years with a record of 13-2. The Leafs advanced to the regional title game but fell to Alleman.
“Now is the right time to step away and give someone else an opportunity to lead the Geneseo baseball program,” he said. “There are several quality coaches within the program who are fully capable of taking over the reigns. Whoever is the next head coach will inherit a varsity team and program that is well-stocked. The incoming seniors are a solid class with returners like Greg Rusk, Cooper Humphries and Lane Akre. The cupboard is certainly not bare for next season. Also, both the freshman and sophomore teams won conference this past season, so the program is on solid footing.”
Brucher ends his coaching career with the Leafs with record of 80-60-1.
“I am very proud of what we accomplished over the last four years,” he said. “Not just the regional title or conference championship, but also for the commitment to baseball that has taken place in Geneseo. As an example, we have three high school summer teams comprised of entirely Geneseo players. Five years ago there were two summer teams made up of players from Henry County. That is truly representative of the cultural mindset and expectation that has been created throughout the program. Hopefully the next coach will continue to build on those expectations for success.”
