Geneseo native Andy Thurman has been hired as the new Geneseo Park District executive director.

Geneseo native Andy Thurman has been hired as the new Geneseo Park District executive director.

“The Geneseo Park District Board of Commissioners is very excited to have Andy assume the responsibility of leadership of our district,” said park board president Kathleen Repass.

“Andy has the energy, vision and understanding of the tremendous accomplishments that have been achieved and the level of excellence that the board of commissioners and the members of the Geneseo Park District expect,” she added.

Thurman has 10 years of park and recreation experience and served the past two-and-a-half years as the superintendent of recreation for the Geneseo Park District.

“As the past superintendent of recreation and an integral member of the leadership team, Andy will have very little difficulty in assuming the role of executive director. He has a great understanding of the history, the expectations and philosophy of the Geneseo Park District,” said Repass.

Thurman has a bachelor’s degree in leisure youth and human services with an emphasis in recreation management and outdoor recreation from University of Northern Iowa.

“It has been one of my goals in my career to become a director, and I am very excited to meet this goal in my hometown. I have been able to spend a little time in all areas of the park district over my almost three years here and I think we have an amazing group of staff members and facilities to continue to provide the services we all love,” said Thurman. “I look forward to working with community leaders and providing innovative recreational opportunities to everyone.”

Thurman replaces park district executive director Molly Hamer.

Hamer, who had served as executive director of the Geneseo Park District since 2007, left the district at the end of August to accept a position as executive director of the Northbrook Park District.
