Shirley A. Schweninger-Hawk, 86, of Geneseo, died Wednesday, April 26, 2017, at Geneseo Good Samaritan. A funeral mass celebrating her life was at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 2 at St. Malachy’s Catholic Church. Fr. Michael Pakula officiated. Burial followed at Oakwood Cemetery, in Geneseo. A visitation was from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, May 1 at Vandemore Funeral Home & Crematory, in Geneseo. A rosary was recited at 4:30 p.m. Memorials may be left to the Shirley Hawk Memorial Fund.

Shirley was born June 24, 1930, the daughter of August and Augusta Schroeder-Nitz. She married Elmer Schweninger on Nov. 15, 1947, in Geneseo. Elmer died on March 12, 1997. Shirley later married Eugene Hawk on May 22, 1999, in Orlando, Fla. Eugene died in March of 2014. Shirley spent her life as a homemaker and worked as a lunchtime supervisor at Geneseo Junior High, where she was known as “Sarge.” She was one of the original organizers of the Geneseo Girls’ Softball League and enjoyed bowling. Shirley was a member of St. Andrew’s Catholic Church, in Orlando, Fla.

She is survived by her sons, Elmer (Sharon) Schweninger, of Pittsburgh, Pa.; John (Carol) Schweninger, of Overland Park, Kan.; and Richard (Pam) Schweninger, of Wichita, Kan.; her daughters, Christine (Joe) Briggs, of Fisher; Rebecca (Brent) Paulsen, of Salix, Iowa; Kathy (John) Horn, of Tilton; Suzanne (Don) Sutton, of Mahomet; and the Rev. Valerie Schweninger, of Geneseo; her 13 grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and seven step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, August and Augusta; and her husbands, Elmer and Eugene.
