In addition to a new building, the food pantry will now have a new name. The Geneseo Food Pantry is now the Geneseo Atkinson Food Pantry.

“Several years ago, the food pantry directors in the area met and decided to change some boundaries. Our boundary had been the Geneseo School District, but it was changed to cover the Geneseo and Atkinson ZIP codes,” explained Fr. Michael Pakula, pastor of St. Malachy Church and president of the Geneseo Atkinson Food Pantry Board.

Despite the change, Pakula said a number of people “didn’t realize we serve Atkinson as well as Geneseo.”

“We knew we needed to include Atkinson in the name,” said Pakula. “We played with several different names, including some without the words ‘food pantry’ in them, but we decided it’s been called the food pantry for so long, we needed to keep that.”

Because the food pantry is about more than just providing food, board members also discussed naming the organization the Geneseo Atkinson Food Pantry and Associated Services. “But we decided that was too long of a name,” said Pakula.

The new name coincides with the construction of a new food pantry building at 550 Dilenbeck Drive.

“The new building’s really coming along,” said Pakula, adding, weather dependent, he expects the building to be finished sometime in October.

“We hope to be in there before Thanksgiving and Christmas,” he noted.

A new building will need new signage, and before new signs are ordered, the food pantry board wanted to make sure they had a new name in place.

The food pantry board approved the new name at its Tuesday, Aug. 15 board meeting.
