Carl O. “Swede” Hawkinson, 87, of Mellen, Wis., formerly of Geneseo, died Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2017, at Park Manor Nursing Home, in Park Falls, Wis. A private family service for Swede will be held at a later date. Mountain Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Mellen and Ashland is assisting the family with arrangements.

Carl was born April 2, 1930, in Mellen, Wis., the son of Henry A. and Gerda M. (Lundquist) Hawkinson. On Dec. 22, 1951, he was united in marriage to Shirley M. Sheridan, in Oakville, Iowa. He worked for more than 20 years for the J.F. Edwards Electrical Construction Company, of Geneseo. During his career at Edwards Construction, the family lived in Geneseo so their daughters could attend school.

In 1974, he and Shirley purchased the Coast to Coast Hardware store in his hometown of Mellen, and retired after selling the business to their daughter and son-in-law in 1997. Swede was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Shirley, of Mellen; his twin daughters, Carla Krueger, of Brooklyn Park, Minn.; and Sue (Paul) Amman, of Mellen; grandson, Clint (Amy) Amman; granddaughter, Gina (Ryan) Broeniman; and great-grandson, Kyle Broeniman, all of Mellen; special nephew, Charles (Debra) Hawkinson, and their sons, Charles Jr. (Nikki) and Carl W. (Pam), all of Mellen; nephews, Bob (Cindy) and David; niece, Paula (Bruce) Polencheck, all of Mellen; as well as many other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Nels Edward “Nick,” Leonard, John and Robert; sister, Elsie; and special nephew, Lester Hawkinson.
