Festivities at the Atkinson Christmas Festival will begin at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 1, and end when “everyone’s had enough fun,” according to committee co-chairman Janis Smith.

“It’s an Atkinson Christmas celebration the whole family will enjoy,” she said.

New this year is the “Trim a Business Door” activity. Local businesses invite groups of people or any individual to decorate their front door in a Christmas theme before the evening of Dec. 1.

Doors will be judged and cash prizes will be awarded. Anyone interested in participating is asked to contact the business of their choice and reserve that front door.

Businesses in Atkinson have tickets to distribute to customers with one ticket given per visit. Customers are asked to sign their name and deposit the ticket into a designated container at

the business.

All tickets will be collected by 5 p.m. on Dec. 1 and combined for a drawing, beginning at 7:45 p.m. The drawing will be held downtown and winners will be announced. Winners must be present to win with the final prize a $500 Atkinson gift certificate.

Another drawing will be held for a sound bar from Crown Home Entertainment, Atkinson, and the village board approved contributing to the cost of a television to be awarded in the drawing at the festival.

Residents and visitors should get a punch card at downtown merchants and have the card punched between 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 1.

When the 13 participating businesses have each punched the card, the cards will be put in a designated container downtown for the drawing for the winner of the sound bar.

Santa will arrive downtown by fire truck and will be available to visit with youngsters from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Town Hall, 400 North State. The children will be able to have their photo taken with Santa and treat bags, provided by the Atkinson Women’s Organization, will be distributed by Little Miss Flame.

The “Ugly Sweater Contest” returns to this year’s Christmas Festival. A hidden judge will be in the downtown area to select the winner of the contest who will receive a $100 village gift certificate. he winner will be announced at 7:45 p.m. on Dec. 1.

Free hot chocolate and samples of soup made by local chefs will be available in the downtown area.

Other events:

• 6:30 p.m. – Reindeer Games for ages 3-10 in the downtown area and prizes will be given.

• 5:30 p.m. – Christmas music in the downtown area until 7:30 p.m., when residents and visitors are invited to sing Christmas songs and carols until 7:45 p.m.

• 6 p.m. – Cookie decorating for youngsters in a vacant building on State St., two doors from the Town Hall.

• 6 p.m. – Ornament-making for youngsters at DeDecker Hardware, 501 North State St.

• Penguin Duck Pluck will be featured in the downtown area at duck tables, marked “for kids” and “for adults.”
