The Christmas Commandos from Grace United Methodist Church, in Geneseo, recently completed their “shock attack” and were able to make Christmas a bit brighter for the 19 families on their list.

Members of the church youth group took holiday baskets to the doorsteps of area residents.

According to the Rev. Mark Graham, pastor at Grace Church, the idea of the Christmas Commandos is to play a game of “ding dong ditch.” The group takes the basket to the door, rings the doorbell and then runs back to the cars. The idea is for no one to see them make the delivery.

“It is an activity that honors people’s privacy and yet is a fun activity for the youth,” Graham said.

The youth group’s Commando Ministry was funded from donations from individuals as well as from the church mission budget.

Church members and other area residents submit names of families and elderly persons living alone who might need some extra help this holiday season and that information is given to the church office and kept confidential.

The holiday baskets contain ham, milk, eggs, stuffing mix, mashed potatoes and gravy mixes, ingredients for green bean casserole, corn, fruit, brownies, cinnamon rolls and cereal.

The young people and their leaders delivered the baskets Sunday, Dec. 17, when they rang the doorbells or knocked on doors at the homes on their list.

“The students and I want to follow the example set forth by Jesus and feed the hungry,” Graham said. “We don’t ask questions. I believe we are here to serve and love, and providing a Christmas meal is just one way we can practice the love of Jesus.”

The Christmas Commandos has become a tradition at Grace Church and the congregation has been very generous in their support of the ministry for many years, Graham said.

“It’s a fun way to do service and a different twist on the food basket concept. Christmas Commandos is a response to the gift that we were given through Christ and we want to be able to give something back,” he said.
