Donna J. Smith, 88, of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2017, at Henry County Health Center, in Mt. Pleasant. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 23 at Elliott Chapel, New London, Iowa. The Rev. Deborah Stowers will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. A private family burial will be Saturday, Dec. 23 at Trinity Cemetery, in Mt. Union, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for Fellowship Cup and VFW Post No. 2561, Mt. Pleasant.

Donna was born Sept. 14, 1929, near LaCrosse, in Hancock County, Illinois, the daughter of James H. and Mildred E. (Thompson) Crabill. On Oct. 2, 1949, she married H. Noble Smith at the Mt. Union United Methodist Church. He preceded her in death on Nov. 5, 1994.

She was a 1947 graduate of the New London High School and was a member of the Mt. Union United Methodist Church. She worked at Shores Pharmacy in New London, Hammond-Henry Hospital and later at Medicap, in Mt. Pleasant.

She and her husband moved to Lisle in 1957, and then to Geneseo in 1974, and later to Mason City to be near their son, Ted, and his growing family.

Mrs. Smith was a member of the VFW Auxiliary No. 2561 and RSVP, both in Mt. Pleasant, and she loved to volunteer. She enjoyed music and loved going to her grandchildren’s school events.

Survivors include her son, Ted Smith; grandchildren, Marissa (Nathan) Varner, Nathanial Smith and Lydia Smith; brothers, Kenneth (Joann) Crabill, of Keosauqua, Iowa; and Don (Carol) Crabill, of Redbud; sisters-in-law, Jan Crabill and Marvel Crabill, of Mt. Pleasant; and Marilyn Crabill, of Lomax; brother-in-law, Bill Mathers, of New London; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; sister, Joan Mathers; brothers, Jim, John and Dean; and one infant sister, Doris.
