Geneseo Police Chief Tom Piotrowski has been placed on paid administrative leave pending an external review of department practices and procedures.

Aldermen voted 7-0 to place Piotrowski on paid leave during a special city council meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 30. Alderman Sue Garlick was absent from the meeting.

The vote followed an 80-minute executive session in which union negotiations with the Fraternal Order of Police regarding state law changes on drug testing also were discussed.

Aldermen made no comments prior to or after the vote. Mayor Kathy Carroll-Duda distributed a press release stating Sgt. Steve Whittington would serve as acting chief during the review process.

The release also stated, “There is no timetable for completion of the review, but the city expects the work to begin almost immediately and the review to be completed efficiently.”

Piotrowski has been a member of the Geneseo Police Department since 1991. He was hired as police chief in December 2001 following the retirement of Louis Bervid Jr.
