Helen M. Dwyer, 93, of Geneseo, formerly of rural Atkinson, died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2018, at Genesis Medical Center East, in Davenport, Iowa. A visitation will be from 4 p.m.​ to 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 26, at Vandemore Funeral Home & Crematory, in Geneseo, with a rosary recited at 6:45 p.m. A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 27, at St. Malachy’s Church. Fr. Michael Pakula will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Anthony’s Cemetery, in Atkinson. Memorials may be left to St. Malachy’s Church or the Henry County Fair Association.

She was born at home during a snowstorm in Rochester, N.Y., on Dec. 21, 1924, the daughter of Isadore and Doris “Nellie” (Pridat) Van Der Bruggen. At the age of 8, her family moved to Kewanee. Helen attended Kewanee High School. Prior to her marriage, she worked at Boss Glove Manufacturing and Walworth’s, both in Kewanee.

Helen married John Dwyer on June 28, 1944, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, in Kewanee. He preceded her in death on March 30, 1989. The couple farmed in rural Atkinson. She was a farm wife, homemaker and proud mother of 10 children – one daughter and nine sons. She was a member of St. Malachy’s Catholic Church in Geneseo and the Altar & Rosary Society at the church. She previously was a member of several card clubs and had been the oldest member of the local Curves gym. She took pleasure in all family gatherings. She enjoyed knitting, puzzles and reading.

She is survived by her children, Doris Fleming, of Gibson City; Jim (Norma) Dwyer, of Greeley, Colo.; Tom (Chris) Dwyer, of Geneseo; John (Joy) Dwyer, of Geneseo; Joe (Lisa) Dwyer, of Geneseo; Mike (Janette) Dwyer, of Atkinson; Bob (Cathy) Dwyer, of Roseville; Dennis (Jacque) Dwyer, of Bettendorf, Iowa; and Richard (Nora) Dwyer, of Muscatine, Iowa. She also is survived by 25 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and eight step-great-grandchildren; as well as a sister, Maryin Weckelman; and sisters-in-law Rhea Dwyer and Marilyn Van Der Bruggen. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Bill; a great-granddaughter, Machala; her brother, Art; and her sister, Gay.
