Betty M. Gibson, 79, of Silvis, formerly of Atkinson, died Friday, March 2, 2018, at Generations at Rock Island, in Rock Island. A memorial service was at 7 p.m. Monday, March 5 at Vandemore Funeral Home & Crematory, in Geneseo. The Rev. Reed Pedersen officiated. A visitation was held prior to the memorial service, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the Betty Gibson Memorial Fund. Per her wishes, cremation rites have been accorded.

Betty was born Nov. 3, 1938, in Geneseo, the daughter of Samuel I. and Grace C. (Munter) Massingill. She graduated from Geneseo High School with the Class of 1956. Betty was united in marriage to Rolland Carlson on July 29, 1956. She later married Charles W. Gibson on Aug. 30, 1984, in Martinsburg, Va. Charles preceded her in death in 2005. Betty worked for Casey’s General Store for 11 years. She was the manager of the Atkinson location for nine of those 11 years. Betty then started working at the welcome center in Rapids City as a clerk supervisor. Betty enjoyed reading, cross-stitching, and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Those left to cherish her memory include her sons, Daryl (Tammy) Carlson, of Nicholasville, Ky.; Scott Carlson, of Cambridge; and Brett (Alisha) Carlson, of Cambridge; daughter-in-law, Karla Carlson, of Osco; grandchildren: Andy (Brooke) Carlson, Wade (Jessica) Carlson, Veronica (fiance Darin Young) Carlson, Blake (Shay) Carlson, Reid Carlson, Jacob Carson, Rachel Carlson, Jessica (Brad Peck) Carlson, Samantha (Jon) Swanson, Abigail Carlson, Brad Ford and Andrew Ruhnow; along with 14 great-grandchildren. Betty also is survived by her brother, Ervin (Carol) Massingill, of Prophetstown; and sister-in-law, Clarice Massingill, of Geneseo. She was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Grace; son, Steven Carlson; brother, Tom Massingill; and nephew, Mark Massingill.
