James L. Cross, 56, of Atkinson, died Tuesday, June 26, 2018, at the University of Iowa Hospital, in Iowa City, Iowa. Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 2 at Vandemore Funeral Home & Crematory, in Atkinson. Military rites were accorded following the service. Minister Jeremy Monk officiated. A visitation was from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, July 1 at Vandemore Funeral Home & Crematory, in Atkinson. Cremation was accorded after the service. Memorials may be directed to the James Cross Memorial Fund.

James was born May 25, 1962, in Moline, the son of Clarence and Alberta (Dennis) Cross. He attended Rock Island High School and later graduated from Hamilton Tech College with a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering technology. He served in the United States Army. James was united in marriage to Dona J. Lawson on Aug. 3, 1985, in Rock Island. He was employed at Parr Instrument Company, in Moline, as a lab testing technician and then at Kewanee Boiler Co. and C.B. Kramer as a boiler tech. He retired from Deere & Co. as a field test technician in the research and development field. He was a member of the Church of Christ and loved online pool and euchre, golfing, gardening and cooking.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Dona; children, David (Hannah Woodard) Cross, of Atkinson; Jesse (Mairead Steadman) Cross, of Moline; and Amanda (Tom) Garcia, of Colona; grandchildren, Emmerson Jade and Stark James; father, Clarence Cross, of Rock Island; brothers, Mike Cross, of Wisconsin; Mark Cross, of Milan; Tim (Kandice Miles) Cross, of Rock Island; mother-in-law, Mickey Lawson, of Illinois; and three brothers-in-law. He was preceded in death by his mother, Alberta; infant sister, Carol; baby Cross; grandson, Gabriel Garcia; and his father-in-law, Elmer Lawson.
