Helen E. Schallow, 91, of Geneseo passed away peacefully surrounded by her children and grandchildren Sunday, Sept. 23, 2018, at Hillcrest Nursing Home, rural Geneseo. Cremation rites were accorded and a private inurnment will take place Friday, Sept. 28, at the Rock Island National Cemetery. The Rev. Dr. Christopher Ritter will officiate.

Helen E. Schallow, 91, of Geneseo passed away peacefully surrounded by her children and grandchildren Sunday, Sept. 23, 2018, at Hillcrest Nursing Home, rural Geneseo. Memorials may be directed to the Geneseo Humane Society.

Vandemore Funeral Home and Crematory, Geneseo, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Helen was born Dec. 11, 1926, the daughter of Henry and Hilma (Jokinen) Ikkala in Marquette, Mich. She was united in marriage to Louis B. Schallow on Sept. 7, 1946, in Michigan. He preceded her in death in 2013.

Helen worked in the supply department at Hammond-Henry Hospital, Geneseo, for 28 years before her retirement. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and active in Women of the Moose, Hammond-Henry Hospital Auxiliary and the V.F.W. Auxiliary.

She enjoyed reading and spending time with her dogs. Helen was a proud grandmother and loved staying up to date on her grandchildren’s activities and accomplishments.

Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Michael (Gwen) Schallow, of St. Charles; daughter,

Corrine Waldbusser, of Geneseo; grandchildren, Sarah Shrake, Scott (Becky) Waldbusser and Kristin (Anthony) Whitt; and two great-grandchildren, Lilly and Emma.

In addition to her husband, Helen was preceded in death by her parents, a grandson, Ryan, four brothers and a sister.
