The Geneseo High School girls’ basketball team’s season came to an end this past week at sectionals, but not before the Lady Leafs captured their first regional title since 2002.

Geneseo junior West Cathcart found his way to the podium for the second straight year, again earning runner-up honors Feb. 20 at the IHSA State Finals in Champaign.

After earning two wins at home over the weekend, the Geneseo boys’ basketball team suffered a non-conference loss in its regular-season finale.

CHAMPAIGN—Austin Marsden of Crystal Lake Central edged West Cathcart of Geneseo 3-2 for the 189-lb. state championship on Saturday evening, Feb. 20, in Assembly Hall.

CHAMPAIGN—West Cathcart of Geneseo reached the championship bout at state last year. He took a big step toward getting back into the finals with a pin in the first round on Friday.

CHAMPAIGN—Geneseo's West Cathcart pinned Lombard Montini's Doug Diedrick at 3:24 in the first round of the state wrestling tournament on Friday, Feb. 19, at Assembly Hall on the University of Illinois campus in Champaign.

The Lady Leaf basketball team capped off its NCIC season with two wins at home and earned a spot in the regional championship game after a win over Galesburg.

Geneseo junior West Cathcart punched his ticket to his second straight IHSA State Finals with a second-place finish in the 189-pound weight class at the Feb. 12-13 Sterling Sectional.

The Geneseo High School boys’ basketball team suffered two tough losses in conference play, but was able to nab one NCIC victory this past week over Streator.

On Senior Night 2010, the Lady Leafs honored their seven seniors in a big way Feb. 4 — with a convincing 53-36 victory over Streator and the team’s 20th win of the season.
