The Geneseo High School cheerleading program held a three day camp July 29 to 31 in the high school gymnasium with cheerleaders from the Universal Cheerleaders Association as instructors.

The Geneseo High School girls’ tennis program held its first summer tennis camp for girls in fifth to 12th grade July 28 to Aug. 1 at the Richmond Hill tennis courts.

A need for female volunteers back in 1975 turned into a 34 year stint as a volunteer with the John Deere Classic for Diane Lowe. Lowe of Colona and owner of Travel Masters in Geneseo, just completed her 34th consecutive year volunteering at the TPC Golf Course in Silvis when the pros come to town for the John Deere Classic. Lowe was recognized with the Outstanding Committee Chair Award this year.

The staff at the Geneseo Community Center teamed up with the staff at B&B Lawn Equipment and Cyclery to offer a bike club to give people in the community an opportunity to enjoy the summer weather, but also get some exercise.

Local Izaak Walton League groups held a “Carp Removal Day” at Atkinson’s Giant Goose Lake on Saturday, July 12.  The weather was beautiful with a soft breeze and temperatures in the 70s. Just one little problem.  Someone forgot to notify the carp to bite!  Some obliged to the tune of about a dozen.  I stayed until around 1 p.m. so there may have been more of the “European” game fish caught.  There were over 65 anglers that participated in the all day event. 

Geneseo High School fans will get a treat and will also be a part of history as they walk into the football stadium for the first time this season. The much talked about new football scoreboard is up and ready to go for the first kick off.

The Geneseo Cal Ripken 12-year-old baseball team captured the Cal Ripken State Tournament Championship July 10 to 13 in Mattoon. This marks the first time a Geneseo baseball team has won a state title.

A new era of volleyball is about to begin as the Lady Leafs will be under direction of new head varsity volleyball coach, Rachel Hufford.

It has been 25 years since the Geneseo Community Center opened its doors and it is still going strong with new members getting in on the activities every day.

Aspiring Geneseo football players took to the field to learn from the Geneseo High School football coaching staff July 7 to 11 at the annual Geneseo Youth Football camp hosted by the GHS Football program.

After nine years on the bench for the Geneseo High School volleyball team, head coach Carlyn McAvoy has decided to hang things up and focus on her family.
