The Geneseo Lady Leafs girls’ basketball team was always looking for a little bit more last season.
Geneseo coach Scott Hardison was always looking to get a little bit more effort, a little bit more depth and a little bit more consistency.
However, this season, the Lady Leafs look like they have an embarrassment of riches.
Geneseo returns senior starters Sydney Himmelman, Renee Rumler Lynsey Gradert and Lindsey Francque to the lineup, with Maddie Mackey returning after missing last season with an ACL tear.
With 15 players on the varsity roster, the Leafs can bring an additional five seniors off the bench who have varsity experience.
“We have competition for every spot every day at practice,” Hardison said. “I think competition breeds effort and urgency and those things lead to a good team.”
The numbers allow Geneseo to be more aggressive attacking the ball in the backcourt and pushing the ball in transition.
The Lady Leafs can attack teams with their size with Francque, Himmelman and Krohn all 5’11” or taller.
In addition, Geneseo can spread the floor with outside shooters like Gradert, Jane Thomas and Paige VandeWiele.
The exit of senior point guard Tarah Fisher allows Rumler to take over that role and Hardison expects Rumler to be at her best this season.
“I think this will be a coming out party,” Hardison said. “She’s going to be able to player her natural position and will be able to show her talent on the floor.”
With a junior class that had a lot of success as a sophomore group last year, Geneseo has to find roles for those players who established the same success they found last year.
Melanie Parker creates problems with her quickness on defense, Allison Yager gives Geneseo another good shooter and Anna McAvoy uses her athleticism to create matchup problems in the post.
“I can’t wait to see how the juniors and senior play together,” Hardison said. “This group really complement each other, and I want to see what combinations of those groups work.
“If we are going to play a more uptempo pace we have to be ready to play more kids and see which groups gel together and work well together.”
