The duo play for the nationally-ranked Lincoln Land Community College women’s volleyball team in Springfield.
However, after the team traveled through the Quad Cities for a tournament in Iowa back in September, they discovered their connection ran even deeper.
The team was planning to get Whiteys Ice Cream on the way back from a tournament in Marshalltown, Iowa, and the girls began to discuss their Quad Cities ties.
Carroll and Anderson realized they both had grandparents from Geneseo.
Not only that, but their grandparents had played sports together regularly while growing up in Hazelwood.
Carroll, the granddaughter of Bob and Lynda Carroll, was the Loggers’ libero during the fall.
Anderson, the granddaughter of Terry and Dixie Anderson, was an opposite player for the Loggers as a freshman this season.
The girls’ families enjoyed an eventful reunion as the Loggers (NJCAA D2) beat the undefeated Indian Hills Warriors 25-22, 21-25, 25-22, 26-18 on Sept 10.
It was a stellar season for the Lincoln Land as they reached the National championship game in Charleston, W. Va.
The Loggers reached the National title game for the second consecutive season.
Lincoln Land fell against rival Parkland College 25-20, 25-20, 25-18 in the championship match on Nov. 19.
Anderson was named to the All-National Tournament team, and the Loggers finished with a record of 40-9.
