The Lady Leafs’ soccer team finished the regular season with a win against Ottawa and advanced to the Class 2A Geneseo Regional with a big victory over Galesburg.

Geneseo at Ottawa

The Lady Leafs finished the regular season by handcuffing the Pirates 7-0 at Ottawa High School on May 10.

Geneseo’s Tori Verbeck scored in the opening minutes, and Heather Dietrich scored with an assist from Verbeck.

With five minutes remaining until half, Dietrich found the net to give Geneseo a 3-0 advantage at halftime.

The Lady Leafs’ Keeli Frerichs scored to open the second half, and Melanie Parker scored with an assist from Kennady Thies.

Thies found the net just a few minutes later, and Verbeck found the net on a connection from Dietrich to give Geneseo a 7-0 victory.

The Lady Leafs’ Taylor Magerkurth made a pair of saves to record the shutout.

Geneseo finishes the regular season with a 15-3 record, and the Lady Leafs have posted 13 shutouts this season.

Geneseo Regional Semifinal

The Leafs demolished the Silver Streaks 12-0 in the Class 2A Regional Semifinal match at the Geneseo Soccer Pitch on May 16.

Dietrich set the tone scoring in the sixth minute off a rebound, but the Lady Leafs didn’t really look at full strength until midway through the first half.

“I think this was a good game to prepare us for the championship game,” Dietrich said. “I’m excited to see how we will play in the regional.”

Dietrich finished with two goals and an assist, and Lainie Dahl scored a goal and set up three scores.

Dahl hit a corner kick to set up a Keeli Frerichs goal in the second half.

Geneseo really started to roll when Kaitlyn Webster scored in the 21st minute, and Dahl scored less than a minute later with an assist by McKenzie Davison.

Frerichs finished with a hat trick scoring twice in the second half.

GHS’ MaKenzie Thompson weaved through bodies to snag a loose ball and put it away for a score in the first half.

Kristin Polowy scored with an assist from Thompson to give Geneseo a 6-0 lead at halftime.

Kennady Thies dominated in the second half scoring a pair of goals in the mercy rule shortened second half.

Geneseo was able to get postseason experience for all of its players in the blowout win.

“Regionals is a fun time,” Geneseo Coach Harvey Morton said. “It’s one-and-done, so everyone wants to be on that field if they can. It’s fun to get everybody in.”

Rachel Daniels scored with an assist from Thompson to make it 12-0.

The Leafs’ Lauren Pardoe and Taylor Magerkurth recorded the shutout in net.

Geneseo has posted 14 shutouts this season and has shutout the last four teams they have faced.

The Lady Leafs (16-3) advance to the Class 2A Geneseo Regional Championship match at the Geneseo Soccer Pitch against Orion-Sherrard (20-4) on Friday, May 19 starting at 6 p.m.
