Some mix ups with the announcing of the points following the 200-meter dash left the Maple Leafs thinking they would finish in second place by half a point.
Instead, it was a Geneseo Northern Illinois Big 12 boys’ track and field three-peat.
Geneseo (98.5) held off Yorkville (94) with Geneseo scoring in 11-of-12 events on the track to claim the title in the 10-team field at Sycamore High School on May 12.
Nick Swartzendruber won the 400-meter dash in 51.21, and Reed Vanderheyden was the 300 hurdles champion in 38.31.
Geneseo’s 4x400 relay team of Kyle Sellers, Natan Soria, Lucas Hofer and Swartzendruber were the champions in 3:25.8.
Swartzendruber finished runner-up in the 800 run in 1:56.7, and Andrew Pischke was runner-up in the 110 hurdles in 15.11.
The Leafs’ Pischke added a third place finish in the 300 hurdles (39.60), and he came in sixth place in the 200 dash (23.40).
Sam Thomas finished runner-up in the shot put with a throw of 53’3.50”.
In the 4x800 relay, Geneseo’s Andrew Benhart, Sellers, Soria and Matthew Ganson finished second in 8:15.57.
Hofer earned third place in the 400 dash in 51.78, and Vanderheyden raced to third in the 200 dash in 22.90.
Vanderheyden finished fourth in the 110 hurdles in 15.54, and Blake Duncan landed fifth place in the 3200 run (9:51.9).
Geneseo’s 4x200 relay team of Sellers, Logan Weber, Jordan Seeley and Keegan Minnaert came in fifth in 1:34.2.
In the 4x100 relay, Geneseo earned a tie for fifth with Andrew Pischke, Vanderheyden, Logan and Colton Pischke sharing the baton for a time of 44.72.
Geneseo’s Benhart finished sixth in the 1600 run in 4:38.2, and Zach Humphrey’s throw of 136’5” earned him sixth in the discus.
Geneseo’s next meet will be at the Class 2A Rochelle Sectional on Thursday, May 18 starting at 4 p.m.
