Sterling Grass Relays

Geneseo finished a few points back of Sterling at the Sterling Grass Relays on Aug. 22.

The Golden Warriors won the annual season opener 23-32 at Hoover Park in Sterling.

Racers divide up into two-person teams with runners alternating a mile each until they have completed a combined six miles.

The Leafs had several runners inactive with conflicts and medical issues but had five teams finish in the top 10.

Neo Colter and Raymond Venneberg led the way for the Maple Leafs with a fourth-place finish of 35:31.

Geneseo’s Spencer Lindstrom and Colby Rapps finished fifth in 36:20, and William Plumley and Rafe Morrison were sixth 37:03.

Christian Booth and Nathan Carroll raced to seventh place in 37:21, and Ky Ariano and Adam Wells finished in 38:32.

Sycamore Invite

Facing the elite of the Northern Illinois Big 12 and several other state powers, Geneseo finished 11th among 15 teams at the Sycamore Invite held at Afton Forest Preserve, in DeKalb, on Aug. 29.

The Leafs’ Venneberg led the team with a 54th place finish in 18:24.

Still working his way back from an injury, Blake Duncan finished 64th in 18:54, and Andrew Rizzo finished 71st in 19:10.

Booth crossed the finish line in 85th place (19:48), and Carroll finished in 20:25.

The Leafs’ Luke Sebastian clocked in at 20:38, and Thackery Newton finished in 20:44.

Geneseo’s frosh/soph team had a solid outing finishing fifth in a 12 team field.

The Maple Leafs’ Colter led the way with a 10th place finish in 14:24, and Rapps finished 20th in 14:53.

Geneseo’s Morrison ran down 24th place in 15:02, and Plumley finished 29th in 15:11.

Lindstrom crossed the finish line in 55th place (16:08), and Ariano finished in 61st place in 16:15.

Ricky Chavez rounded out the Geneseo scores with a 70th place finish in 16:38.

The Maple Leafs’ next run will be at the Galesburg at Lake Storey Park on Saturday, Sept. 2 at 9 a.m.
