Having secured a berth in the state tennis tournament, it seems anything is possible for the Lady Leafs’ Madi Miller and Jane Thomas.

The Geneseo doubles team of Miller and Thomas finished runner-up at the Galesburg 1A Sectional, on Oct. 14.

This will be the first time the Lady Leafs’ tennis team will be competing at the state meet since the IHSA moved to the two-class system last season.

“I talked to them about how there are several teams out that we have faced that have gone to state,” Geneseo Coach Kevin Reed said. “We are good enough to really do some damage at state, but we have to start with the first win and go from there.”

Reed said the goal was to get a win at state, and if they accomplish that, earn a spot in Friday’s field with a second win.

If Miller and Thomas reach the second day at the state tournament, they will be the first doubles team in school history to accomplish the feat.

In 2015, Geneseo’s Tarah Fisher and Grace Madigan became first doubles team to reach the sectional finals, and they earned the first doubles win at state in school history.

Miller and Thomas became the second doubles team to reach the sectional finals earning them their first state trip.

Geneseo’s Miller and Thomas had both fallen just short of state last season, but with state on the line, the duo cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory to punch their tickets to state.

In the semifinal match, Geneseo was in command leading 4-1 until they got a little too comfortable against the duo from Peoria Notre Dame and fell 4-6 in the opening set.

After dominating the second set 6-0, Geneseo was in a familiar situation leading 4-1 when they hit a bump in the road and PND closed the gap to 4-2.

“Jane Thomas said to Madi, ‘This is not going to happen to us again,’” Reed said.

The Lady Leafs closed out the match 6-2 to advance to the championship.

Alleman’s Lauren Hird and Noely Baumann won the final 6-1, 6-1.

In singles, Geneseo’s Bryann Brophy fell in a three-set heartbreaker 6-2,6-7, 6-3.

Miller and Thomas will play against Kylie Jozwik and Melissa Variny from Lake Villa in the opening round of the tournament on Thursday, Oct. 19, at Schaumburg High School.

Alleman’s Hird and Baumann are seeded among the top five in the state in Class 1A.
