Moline at Geneseo

The Maple Leafs suffered their first loss of the season defeated 47-24 by the Maroons, on Dec. 6.

Moline won eight matches by pin or technical fall, while Geneseo tallied six wins but just two were by pin or technical fall.

For Geneseo Coach Jon Murray, the score was less important than coming away with one thing.

“Experience,” Murray said. “That’s why we want (teams) like this on our schedule to get that experience and get better. That’s what it’s all about.”

Moline is ranked 20th in Class 3A, and Geneseo is ranked eighth in Class 2A.

The Maple Leafs match was highlighted by wins from Billy Blaser and Andrew Rizzo who both remain undefeated.

Rizzo was in complete command with an impressive win by technical fall at 138 pounds.

Geneseo’s Rizzo is currently ranked fourth at 138 pounds in Class 2A by iwcoa.net.

Blaser capped the meet with Geneseo’s only victory by pin (2:02) during a bout with Cobie Underwood at 285 pounds.

With a little bit of a history between the two, Murray knew the match would be one that would push Blaser.

Blaser earned a narrow victory against Underwood at Wharton Field House last year, and Blaser came out on top against Underwood at the IWCOA freshman/sophomore state meet.

The Maple Leafs' Joe Stohl nabbed a victory by decision at 220 pounds with an escape to start the third period for a 3-2 win.

Heath Henderson was in complete control during the 170-pound match notching a win by major decision, 10-2.

Geneseo's Luke Henkhaus won the 120-pound match by decision 6-2 after fighting off a late rally in the third period.

A freshman, the Leafs' Logan Tuggle added a win by decision with a 4-2 victory at 126 pounds.

Geneseo vs. Freeport and Manteno

The Maple Leafs earned victories over Manteno and Freeport, on Dec. 9.

Against Freeport, Geneseo scored a 60-24 victory winning four of eight contested matches by pin.

Geneseo's Blaser added another victory by pin to his resume winning the 285-pound match in 1:48.

Ethan McKelvain won with a second period pin at 195 pounds in 2:48, and Josh Decker won the 160-pound match by pin in 5:20.

Henkhaus tacked on a win by pin in 1:30 at 120 pounds.

Against Manteno, Geneseo defeated Manteno 59-17 winning seven of nine contested matches.

Blaser won by pin at 285-pound in 3:03, and Stohl won the 220-pound match by pin in 3:31.

Rizzo won the 138-pound match by pin in 1:54, and Liam Barlow earned a pin in 53 seconds to close out the match at 106 pounds.

Henderson locked up a quick pin at 170 pounds in 53 seconds, and Jack Morrell nabbed a pin at 145 pounds in 1:03.

Clay DeBaillie tallied a win by technical fall at 113 pounds to win 15-0.
