The Maple Leafs won 7-of-11 contested matches to defeat the Golden Warriors 48-21, in Sterling, on Dec. 14.

GHS’ Heath Henderson earned a pin at 170 pounds in 1:29 to get Geneseo on the scoreboard, and Joe Stohl earned a victory by pin at 220 pounds in 2:35.

The Leafs’ Billy Blaser won the 285-pound match with a pin in 3:24, and Luke Henkhaus won the 120-pound match by decision, 6-5.

The Leafs’ Jack Morrell finished off the 145-pound match with a first period pin in 1:54.

Geneseo’s Augie Schmitt won the 132-pound match by decision 11-8, and Andrew Rizzo won the 138-pound match by decision, 9-6.

Rex Whitlatch Invitational

The Maple Leafs finished 17th among a 21-team field despite being the smallest school in competition at Hinsdale Central, on Dec. 16.

Geneseo (81.50) had five individual place finishers, and Oak Park River Forest (266.50) won the team title.

Geneseo’s Blaser finished runner-up at 285 pounds, defeated in the championship match by Jeff Griffin, 3-2.

Ranked seventh in the state in Class 2A by iwcoa.net, Blaser won his opening round match by major decision, 12-0.

Blaser earned a win by pin in 4:46 in the second round, and Blaser won the semifinal match 5-4 by decision to advance to face Griffin.

Homewood-Flossmoor’s Griffin is ranked fourth in the state in Class 3A.

Henkhaus won his opening round match at 120 pounds by pin in 5:27.

After being knocked into the consolation bracket, he won a 6-5 decision to finish in seventh place.

Geneseo’s Rizzo won his opening round match by technical fall 17-2 at 138 pounds, and he added a 9-3 win by decision in the second round.

Rizzo earned a third win in the championship bracket with a 10-7 decision to end up finishing seventh.

Joe Stohl opened the 220-pound bracket with a 3-2 victory by decision.

Later, he added an 8-2 win by decision in the consolation bracket to finish in eighth place.

Geneseo’s Eli Apple won his opening round match at 182 pounds with a 3-2 decision.

He picked up a 15-10 win by decision in the second round to cement an eighth-place finish.
