The Geneseo girls’ basketball team ran its winning streak to eight-consecutive games with wins over DeKalb, Sterling and Rochelle.

Geneseo at DeKalb

The Lady Leafs surged out of halftime to defeat the Barbs 63-51 on Jan. 20.

With Geneseo trailing 29-26 at halftime, the Lady Leafs outscored DeKalb 22-7 in the third quarter to take the lead for good.

The Lady Leafs’ Heather Dietrich kept getting to the free throw line shooting 11-of-17 from the charity stripe and finishing with a team-high 17 points.

The Lady Leafs lived at the line making 21-of-32 against DeKalb which only made 14 trips to the line.

In addition, Geneseo made free throws when they mattered most making 7-of-11 in the fourth quarter.

Geneseo’s Josie Brown scored 13 points, and Keeli Frerichs finished with 10 points.

The Lady Leafs’ Hannah Himmelman scored eight points, and Tori Verbeck finished with seven points.

Geneseo’s Anna McAvoy scored four points, and Jane Thomas and Maddi Barickman each scored two points.

Geneseo at Sterling

A strong start helped Geneseo hang on for a 48-36 road win against the Golden Warriors on Jan. 22.

The Lady Leafs outscored Sterling 12-0 in the first quarter and led 29-14 by halftime.

It was a balanced scoring effort for Geneseo’s offense.

Himmelman scored nine points, and Brown and McAvoy finished with eight points.

The Leafs’ Frerichs and Verbeck scored six points, and Dietrich finished with five points.

Geneseo’s Mariah Smith, Kaitlyn Webster and Maddi Barickman each scored two points.

Geneseo at Rochelle

The Lady Hubs gave Geneseo all they could handle on Jan. 23.

However, the Lady Leafs survived for a 49-48 victory to extend their winning streak to eight games.

Rochelle stole the inbound pass to get one last chance to knock off the Leafs, but Geneseo kept them off the scoreboard to secure the win.

Brown and McAvoy each scored nine points to lead the Lady Leafs’ balanced scoring attack.

Geneseo’s Frerichs, Verbeck and Himmelman each scored eight points, and Dietrich finished with four points.

Thomas scored two points, and Barickman made 1-of-2 from the line.

The Lady Leafs improved their overall record to 16-7 and 7-2 NIB 12 West.

Geneseo’s next home game will be against Stark County at the Wyoming Gym on Saturday, Jan. 27 at 2:30 p.m.
