Geneseo Coach Brad Storm believed if the Maple Leafs had done just a few things differently they would have pulled off a huge upset against Ottawa.

However, Ottawa was able to pull away late to earn a 62-54 victory at home over the Maple Leafs on Jan. 19.

Strom was proud of the way his team competed and saw many signs of improvement.

Ottawa started the game hot and put Geneseo back on its heels, but sophomore star Isaiah Rivera helped get Geneseo back into the game.

Rivera scored 26 points in the first half to help Geneseo take a 30-25 lead at halftime.

Rivera finished with a game-high 33 points, and Ottawa’s Wyatt Hill finished with a team-high 23 points for Ottawa.

Starting the fourth quarter Ottawa took a 44-41 lead, but Geneseo kept hanging around trailing 54-49 with less than two minutes remaining.

Storm said that while the Maple Leafs battled hard, the Pirates made too many plays to close out the game.

Geneseo’s Isaiah Rivera was nominated as the PrepHoopsIllinois Player of the Week on Jan. 22.

After his performance against Ottawa, Rivera was nominated as one of eight players from around the state to be voted on as player of the week.
