The Geneseo baseball team is going to need everyone to fill in the holes left by graduation.

“The last four years we’ve had a minimum of nine or ten seniors on the team every year,” Geneseo Coach Scott Christensen said. “This is the first year since 2014 we are down to four seniors.”

What Geneseo does have back are players who came through when it mattered most.

The Maple Leafs’ Jaren Brucher worked a 12 pitch at-bat before driving in the game-tying run in the seventh inning of the sectional semifinals last season.

Geneseo battled its way back to the second sectional victory in school history with a 10-8 victory over U-High.

The Leafs’ Kyle Wise clubbed a pinch-hit double with the bases loaded to give the Leafs the lead 9-7 in the regional championship game.

Kyle Pittenger was

Geneseo’s most reliable arm off the bench during the Maple Leafs’ playoff run

last season.

In order to try to find everyone the right fit this season, Geneseo will keep its lineup fluid moving guys around the diamond and trying others on the mound.

“The last several years, we’ve always had guys who could pitch and didn’t play other positions,” Christensen said. “This year we only have one of those guys. It’s really going to change whos on the field because of who is on the mound.”

Pitching might be the spot most affected by graduation, Geneseo’s Pittenger and Brucher return with experience on the mound.

Geneseo has already been hit with some back luck losing pitcher and outfielder Braden Robinson for the year with a shoulder injury.

However, a majority of Geneseo’s players have pitching experience.

A junior, Colton Garcia worked his way onto the varsity infield last season and will take over shortstop this season, and Cole Hartman will start the season at second base.

Zac Olson and Kyle Toone will take over behind the plate after losing IHSBCA Class 3A All-State catcher Keaton Rice to graduation.

Missing all of last season with a knee injury, Jake Winslow flashed some power hitting the ball at the sophomore level.

The last six seasons, Geneseo has finished with 20 or more wins and the winning mentality is something the Maple Leafs want to be contagious.

“We always pull up a few sophomores to practice with the varsity team,” Christensen said. “I want them to get better and see how we practice. Things are faster at the varsity level and I want them to be around the winning atmosphere. You hope that carries over so when they become varsity guys they know what to do.”

A sophomore, Isaiah Rivera will get a look on the mound and in the field with the varsity team.
