The Geneseo soccer team will be looking to replace elite players at each position on the pitch this season.

Geneseo lost program pillars to graduation in Paige Gramling (forward), Ally Klein (defender) and Jenna Decker (defender).

After winning a sectional championship in 2016 and reaching the sectional finals in 2017, Geneseo will have a lot of new faces in the mix to try to maintain the level of success the Lady Leafs have come to expect.

“I think they are ready for the challenge,” Geneseo Coach Harvey Morton said. “I think every year there is some sort of pressure, but when you lose good leaders like we have replacing them is always tough.”

A senior, Lauren Murray will be Geneseo’s only returning defender and the Leafs plan to try different rotations to find the right fit for the back line.

After seeing some action in net last season, Lauren Pardoe will take over the duties at keeper, and Morton thinks she has the mental toughness to get the job done.

“She’s a very tough kid,” Morton said. “She wants it bad. She’s a very hard worker. She brings a lot of energy and she knows the position and I think she’ll fit in nicely with this team.”

With changes on the defensive end, the Lady Leafs return Northern Illinois Big 12 West MVP Heather Dietrich to solidify the midfield and forward groups.

Morton plans to move Dietrich around to see where they can maximize her tenacious style of play that helped her finish with 21 goals and 12 assists.

A senior, McKenzie Davison will be a returner with experience in the midfield, and Keeli Frerichs had a breakout year as a freshman last season.

A possession team, Geneseo will try to find ways to utilize a speedy group of forwards like Kennady Thies, MaKenzie Thompson, Lauren Henderson and Rachel Daniels

“We have a good core of returning players,” Morton said. “We are not without experience at the varsity level which is a good thing.”

Geneseo at Galesburg

The Lady Leafs opened the season with a 10-0 victory over the Silver Streaks at Galesburg High School on March 20.

Geneseo’s Rachel Daniels finished the game with four goals, and the Lady Leafs had seven different players score in the match.

Geneseo took a 5-0 advantage into halftime, and the Leafs outshot Galesburg 24-0 in the game.

The Leafs’ Sidney Clary and Kristin Polowy each found the back of the net in the first half, and Heather Dietrich finished with a goal and an assist.

In the second half, Keeli Frerichs, MaKenzie Thompson and McKenzie Davison all scored for Geneseo.

The Maple Leafs’ Lauren Henderson and Kennady Thies each added an assist.

The Geneseo JV team picked up their first victory of the season with an 8-0 victory over the Silver Streaks.
