Ottawa at Geneseo

The Lady Leafs finished the season with their sixth-consecutive shutout

defeating the Lady Pirates 5-0 at the Geneseo Soccer Pitch on May 10.

Geneseo scored three first-half goals with two scores in the first 20 minutes of the match.

Geneseo’s Heather Dietrich scored with an assist from MaKenzie Thompson in the fourth minute, and Kennady Thies found the back of the net in the 15th minute.

Rachel Daniels scored with an assist from Sydney Anast to lift Geneseo to a 3-0 lead.

In the second half, Dietrich launched a corner kick that resulted in an own goal, and Dietrich scored again in the 76th minute with an assist from Melanie Parker.

Geneseo keeper Lauren Pardoe made a pair of saves in the 66th minute to keep the shutout intact.

The Lady Leafs haven’t allowed a goal since a 7-1 victory on the road against LaSalle-Peru on April 26.

“It was a little rough in the beginning,” senior captain Lauren Murray said. “We practice really hard every single day and have improved throughout the season.”

Replacing three starting players on the back line this season, Geneseo has found the right mix winning seven-consecutive to close out the regular season.

“We had a lot of different players in a lot of different roles early on,” Geneseo Coach Harvey Morton said. “We have been sticking with that same group, and they are starting to settle into what they need to do in their role and it’s helped us.”

Sterling Class 2A Regional Semifinal — Geneseo vs. LaSalle-Peru

The Lady Leafs found out quickly that there would be no outright coronation in the semifinal match.

Geneseo performed like a different team following halftime scoring two goals in the first minute and a half of the second half to take a 4-0 lead.

The Lady Leafs defeated the Lady Cavaliers 9-0 at Roscoe Eades Stadium, in Sterling, on May 15.

Geneseo led 2-0 at halftime, but the Lady Leafs were disappointed after battling through a sluggish performance to start the game.

“(Morton) told us that we had to come out and earn the win,” Daniels said. “It’s not just going to be handed to us. Before half started, we were talking and saying we have to work for it. We connected some passes and made it happen.”

Daniels and Dietrich each scored in the first half, but the Lady Cavaliers’ Lea Selquist was outstanding in the first half.

However, Selquist was removed after halftime with a wrist injury.

In the second half, Daniels scored 21 seconds after the first touch to set the tone for the final half.

Geneseo’s MaKenzie Thompson kept adding a goal just a minute later.

Daniels finished with a hat trick and Thompson scored a pair of goals and launched two screamers that led to Geneseo goals off rebounds.

“We’re all working together and a goal is a goal,” Thompson said. “It’s not about just me. It’s about everyone.”

A freshman, Taylor DeSplinter scored a pair of goals and put pressure on the L-P defense leading to an own goal in the closing minutes.

Geneseo (16-3) will meet Streator in the Sterling Class 2A Regional Championship on Saturday, May 19 at 11 a.m.

Geneseo has outscored opponents 49-1 during their eight-game win streak.
