Geneseo had four athletes qualify for the AAU National Jr Olympics with strong finishes at the AAU Region 14 Qualifier, at Simpson College, in Indianola, Iowa.

The Lady Leafs’ Josie Brown ran to victory in two events at the qualifier which concluded on July 1.

Competing for the Mississippi Valley Track Club, Brown won the 1500-meter dash with a personal record time of 5:00.79, and she added a title in the 800 in 2:19.78 in the women’s 17-18 age division.

Tori Verbeck had an outstanding weekend highlighted by a runner-up finish in the women’s 17-18 division of the heptathlon with a PR score of 3483.

A senior-to-be, Verbeck won the heptathlon’s shot put (9.91m) and javelin (26.62).

Verbeck earned a spot at nationals with a PR throw in the shot put (11.10m) to finish in fourth place, a PR throw in the javelin to finish runner-up (26.54m) and a third-place finish in the high jump (1.42m).

In the high jump, Abby Reakes cleared 1.52m to finish third in the 15-16-year-old division.

In her first competition throwing the javelin, Reakes qualified for nationals with a throw of 20.82m to finish in fourth place.

Geneseo’s Esther Brown earned a trip to nationals running a leg of the Mississippi Valley Track Club’s 4x400 relay.

The relay team finished fifth in the 15-16-year-old division in 4:30.73, and Esther finished 11th individually in the 800 in 2:42.18.

The AAU National Jr Olympics will begin at Drake Stadium, in Des Moines, Iowa, starting on July 28.
