The Lady Leafs’ Jenna Cheek earned All-State honors with a 22nd place finish at the IHSA Class 1A State golf tournament.
A senior, Cheek fired a two-round total of 163 at Red Tail Run Golf Course in DeKalb.
Cheek is the first Geneseo girls to earn All-State honors since Monica Lieving earned the honor in 2014.
The conditions were difficult on Cheek who faced 38 degrees temperatures with a mix of rain and sleet.
Cheek was among the top 24 individuals not on an advancing team following a first round 80.
“She’s been a good player since her freshmen year,” Geneseo Coach Jon Murray said. “She finally got her payoff this year for keeping with it and sticking with it. It’s very well deserved.”
Geneseo finished 10th (367, 79 over par) in the team standings after the first day and was among the bottom four teams cut from the field.
However, the Lady Leafs were only four strokes behind the final team advancing to the second day.
“They did their best,” Murray said. “I’m proud of them for getting through it. There was disappointment from not advancing, but most of the team was still there along with their parents to cheer on Jenna. That said a lot to me.”
The Lady Leafs’ Emma Snell fired an 89 and was a few strokes away from advancing individually.
Geneseo’s Elizabeth Roodhouse carded a 98 in the first round, and Eryn Murray finished with 100.
Paige Laingen came in with a 100, and Keely Nguyen finished with a 106.
