Geneseo’s Josie Brown had a few things written on her hand as a reminder for herself during the Northern Illinois Big 12 meet.

Words like at compete, relax, breath and be confident along with a reminder to herself about how she belongs here and to be present in the moment competing at the final NIB 12 conference race held at Richmond Hills on Oct. 13.

Brown didn’t look like she had any problem focusing leading the Lady Leafs to a third-place team finish and a ninth-place individual finish in 19:23.2.

A senior, Brown believes this year is different than her past three years.

“You always have goals like go to state,” Brown said. “This year as things progress you see how everything is coming together. You realize how realistic it actually is.”

One of the best teams in the state, Yorkville earned the team title.

However, Geneseo proved to themselves they belong.

“When you are competing against the best like Yorkville makes you a better runner,” Brown said. “You see how they do it as a team and it makes us better. It helps us realize how we can compete when we compete with them here.”

Geneseo’s Lacey Laxton finished 14th in 20:05.0, and Julia Poel had another superb effort during her senior year.

Poel finished 18th in 20:18.8 and was excited Geneseo was able to host the final NIB 12 races.

“I feel like we went out with a bang,” Poel said. “I love the course. It’s a challenge. It’s true cross country. I’m glad the rest of the teams got a chance to see this is Geneseo.”

The Leafs’ Anna Girten made the top 25 with a 22nd place finish in 20:49.1 , and Lauren Belvel grabbed 29th in 21:07.5.

Avery Magerkurth came in 33rd place in 21:25.1, and Anna Pierce finished in 34th place in 21:26.4.
