The Lady Leafs’ Josie Brown won the individual title at the Class 2A Galesburg Regional.

The Geneseo cross country team finished runner-up four points behind champion Peoria Notre Dame among a nine-team field at Lake Storey Park on Oct. 20.

Brown claimed the individual regional title in 19:25, a 31-second victory over runner-up Rachel Ehrhart from Peoria Notre Dame.

“It was nice to see that happen for Josie,” Geneseo Coach Kelley Timmerman said. “I know she’s struggled in the past and tried to work through a lot of things, but she’s had a very healthy year. It’s time to take that next step and get her back down to state.”

Julia Poel ran down fifth in 21:14, and Lacey Laxton claimed sixth in 20:19 as a freshman.

Geneseo’s Anna Pierce stepped up in a big way to finish 18th in 21:25.

The Lady Leafs’ Avery Magerkurth landed 23rd in 21:34, and Lauren Belvel finished in 24th in 21:36.

The Lady Leafs’ Anna Girten finished 26th in 21:54.

“I don’t think they realize how good they are and what their potential is until they lay it on the line,” Timmerman said. “I think there’s a lot of potential there.”

With the top five schools from the sectional field advancing to the state meet, Geneseo will need another special performance if they want to advance to state for the first time since 2011.

“We need everyone’s A-plus game,” Timmerman said. “We are right there. That fifth position is what we are vying for and we have a lot of the top schools in the state in our sectional.”

The Lady Leafs advance to the Class 2A East Peoria Sectional held at Illinois Central College on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 10 a.m.
