The Lady Leafs’ basketball team continued to dominate the field during the Geneseo Thanksgiving tournament with wins against Sherrard, Alleman and Peoria Christian.

Sherrard at Geneseo

The Lady Leafs defense made a strong impression during Geneseo’s 55-22 victory at Geneseo High School on Nov. 14.

The Leafs’ defense forced Sherrard to make 33 turnovers, and Geneseo led 31-11 at halftime.

The Lady Leafs’ Keeli Frerichs finished with four points and six steals, and Maddi Barickman had another strong showing on offense with a game-high 14 points.

Himmelman was a presence in the post with six points and a team-high seven rebounds, and Adia Raya finished with six points off the bench.

Josie Brown finished with six points and three rebounds, and Lauren Pardoe finished with six points.

Kaitlyn Webster tallied five points, and Geneseo made 14-of-24 from the free-throw line.

The Leafs’ Tori Verbeck, Abbi Barickman, Eden McAvoy and Anna Pierce each scored two points.

Alleman at Geneseo

Most teams have a defensive specialist whose primary job is to lock down an elite player on offense.

The Lady Leafs have proved they have three during a 50-31 victory over the Pioneers during the Geneseo Thanksgiving Tournament at Geneseo High School on Nov. 16.

Through three games, the Lady Leafs are holding teams to 26.3 points per game.

“When you put Keeli, Tori and Josie together in a package defensively, I wouldn’t want to play against them,” Geneseo Coach Scott Hardison said. “Our goal was to use that three-headed monster of ball pressure with those three. You don’t always have that on a team, and it’s going to continue to dictate what the other team can do if we put ball pressure on them.”

The Lady Leafs’ 3-and-D style worked well forcing 28 turnovers in the game.

After Alleman closed the gap to 12-8 in the second quarter, Geneseo’s guards took over.

Frerichs drove to the basket for a layup, and Verbeck drained a 3-pointer to help Geneseo take a 17-8 lead.

Frerichs finished with three points three rebounds, a team-high three steals and four assists.

Brown notched three points and two rebounds.

Just before halftime, Himmelman established herself in the post scoring six-consecutive points to build a 23-12 lead, and Maddi Barickman knocked down a 3-pointer with 24 seconds left in the half.

“We have so many great players, everyone can step up at a different time,” Himmelman said. “It’s easy to play through when you can count on someone at different times. You can’t guard everyone at once.”

In the second half, Himmelman made a jumper to end an Alleman run at 29-20.

Himmelman finished with nine points and 10 rebounds, and Abbi Barickman finished with eight points.

Abbi Barickman drained a 3-pointer to reestablish control at 34-20.

Alleman started to get on a run in the fourth quarter, but Kammie Ludwig answered scoring on a drive to the hoop to extend the score to 43-29 and making a jumper a minute later.

Ludwig finished with eight points, and Maddi Barickman added eight points.

Peoria Christian at Geneseo

The Lady Leafs demolished Peoria Christian 71-6 at Geneseo High School on Nov. 17.

Geneseo led 50-3 at halftime, and the Leafs had 10 players score in the blowout.

Himmelman scored a game-high 14 points, and Brown scored 13 points.

McAvoy finished with 10 points, and Raya put in eight points.
