Although the Geneseo girls’ track and field team didn’t have anyone bring home medals at the IHSA State Meet last weekend, May 22-23, the Lady Leafs did have two athletes place 11th in the state.
“I think everything went pretty well,” said head coach Phil Paulson. “It was a good experience for all the kids and definitely positives for the seniors.”
Megan Wyffels took 11th overall in the finals of the pole vault, clearing 9-6. Wyffels also reached 9-6 in the preliminaries where she came in ninth to advance to the finals.
Amanda Egan also placed 11th in the state in the discus with a throw of 111-08. She finished fourth in the preliminaries with the same distance to qualify her for the finals.
“Megan getting in the top 11 in the state was a good send off for her,” said Paulson. “And Amanda will be pretty good in the years progress.”
The 4x800-meter relay of Amy Cosgrove, Betsy Winberry, Danielle Dewey and Joann Chenoweth placed seventh in the preliminaries with a time of 10 minutes and 25.47 seconds.
“The girls had a sense of purpose and I am sure they had some jitters,” said Paulson. “But I think they prepared well and warmed up well. They were ready to compete.”
Jessie DeFauw was the other state qualifier in the high jump, but recorded a no-height in the prelims.
“I think the season went really well, but there was a lot of adversity,” said Paulson. “We had early injuries, but the girls over came it and got better as the season progressed and began to get excited about track. It was an inspired way to finish the season and hopefully they will pick it up for next year.”
