Geneseo's West Cathcart pinned Lombard Montini's Doug Diedrick at 3:24 in the first round of the state wrestling tournament on Friday, Feb. 19, at Assembly Hall on the University of Illinois campus in Champaign.
The Maple Leaf senior (41-1) will square off with Mt. Zion sophomore Grant Naylor (33-6) in quarterfinals tonight.
Cathcart landed a takedown for a 2-0 lead with five seconds to go in the first period of his bout with Diedrick.
As the second period began, Diedrick was the down wrestler. About a minute into the period, Cathcart put the Bronco on his side for a near fall and a 4-0 lead.
With 36 seconds to go in the period, Cathcart got the stick.
