Austin Marsden of Crystal Lake Central edged West Cathcart of Geneseo 3-2 for the 189-lb. state championship on Saturday evening, Feb. 20, in Assembly Hall.
After a scoreless first period, Marsden started the second in the down position. Forty seconds into the period, he reversed Cathcart for a 2-0 lead.
To start the third period, Cathcart took the down position. With 21 seconds left in the match, the Maple Leaf reversed Marsden to deadlock the score.
But with only five seconds to go before overtime, Marsden escaped to clinch the win.
