Geneseo, Ill. -

The Geneseo boys’ basketball team split its contests this past week, nabbing a conference win over Morris, but then falling the next day in non-conference play to Galesburg.

Geneseo vs. Galesburg

Galesburg proved to be too much for Geneseo in the second half Saturday night Jan. 30 as the Silver Streaks captured a 49-34 win over the visiting Leafs.

The game remained close through the first half with Galesburg taking the 9-8 lead at the end of the first quarter and the three-point advantage, 20-17 at the half. Galesburg scored 11 points in the second quarter, while Geneseo finished with nine.

After the break, the Silver Streaks came out and knocked down 17 points in the third quarter and held the Leafs to nine for a 37-26 score. Galesburg posted 12 more points in the fourth quarter to seal the victory, while Geneseo ended the quarter only scoring eight points.

Offensively, Devan DePauw led the team with seven points as he knocked down a shot from beyond the arc and two field goals.

Billy Hamer followed with six points, hitting three shots from the field, while Blake Croegaert and Sam Hamer added five points apiece, both with a three pointer and a field goal.

Michael Ashpole and Andrew Denney finished the game with four points each, both scoring on two field goals, while Jonathan Staab ended the game with two points on a field goal and Connor Johnson went 1-for-2 from the line for his lone point of the game.

Geneseo vs. Morris

It was a one-point ball game at the end of the first quarter in favor of the Leafs, 14-13. Then in the second quarter, the Geneseo defense went to work as the squad held Morris scoreless through the entire quarter for a 23-13 score at the half.

Morris outscored Geneseo by two in the third quarter, 6-4 for a 27-19 Geneseo advantage. In the fourth quarter, despite Morris posting 17 points to Geneseo’s 15, the Leafs were able to hang on for the victory.
