The Geneseo wrestling team earned two more wins on the mat this past week over Streator and UT.

Geneseo vs. UT

After dropping the first two bouts of their match up with UT Jan. 14, the Leaf wrestlers swept the remaining 12 weight classes on their way to a 65-7 victory.

“We were sloppy. We were not at our best last night at all,” said head coach Jon Murray. “We were able to overcome mistakes, but we definitely found a few things we need to improve on.

“I didn’t feel good about last night because of the positions we got into. If we would have been against a good wrestler we wouldn’t come away with the win. The positive was we didn’t wrestle to our potential and got the win over UT. That says a lot about our program.”

The match started at 106 pounds where Antonio Tumbarello was defeated in an 8-6 decision, and Ross Chapman (113-lbs.) fell in an 11-3 major decision to give UT the 7-0 lead.

Jon Warner (120-lbs.) got the Leafs on the board with a 15-5 major decision win, and Hunter Grau (126-lbs.) put Geneseo in the lead with a pin in 3 minutes and 37 seconds for a 10-7 score.

Clayton Kennedy (132-lbs.) pinned his opponent in 2:47; while Cody Bormann (138-lbs.) earned a pin in 3:44.

Jarred Bruce (145-lbs.) won by technical fall in 4:26 by a score of 16-0; followed by Josiah Cropp (152-lbs.) who also won by technical fall in 4:30, 16-0.

Cole Hunzeker (160-lbs.) edged out his UT opponent by one in a 5-4 decision; while Scott Schulte (170-lbs.) came up with a pin in 3:08.

Ryan Pitra (182-lbs.) pinned his Panther opponent in 5:10; followed by Brandon Mizlo (195-lbs.) with a pin in 4:59.

Lane Akre (220-lbs.) earned a pin in 3:47; while Nick Verbeck (285-lbs.) made quick work of his opponent with a pin in :58.

“I want them to learn to hold their positions and keep their movements clean,” said Murray. “They are getting out of position and when it is a guy they are going to beat anyways I want them to work on their technique.

“I am proud of them because they got into tough positions, but fought to come out of it. Our guys do have guts.”

Geneseo vs. Streator

The Leafs made quick work of host Streator Jan. 9 as Geneseo dominated the Bulldogs, 67-9 in a conference showdown.

“I felt better coming out of Streator for some reason,” said Murray. “Streator was never a threat to us, but we did have a couple of tight individual matches.”

Mizlo (195-lbs.) started the night off with a 12-3 major decision win for the Leafs; followed by Akre (220-lbs.) with a pin in 2:00.

A.J. Marmion (285-lbs.) received a forfeit; while Tumbarello (106-lbs.) quickly pinned his opponent in :56 to put the Leafs up 22-0.

Chase Boone (113-lbs.) suffered a loss by pin in 1:56, but Warner (120-lbs.) rebounded the Leafs with a pin in 1:49; followed by Grau (126-lbs.) with a pin in 1:52.

Kennedy (132-lbs.) fell in a 5-2 decision; while Justin Cain (138-lbs.) earned a pin in 1:15.

Bruce (145-lbs.) grabbed an 8-2 decision win; while Cropp (152-lbs.) pinned his opponent in 3:36.

Hunzeker (160-lbs.) took down his opponent by pin in 3:20; while Schulte (170-lbs.) pinned his opponent in 3:20; and Justin Scott (182-lbs.) received a forfeit.

The Leafs will be in action this weekend in the Geneseo Invite. Competition starts tonight at 4 p.m. and at 9 a.m. Jan. 18.

“We are going to see tough competition,” said Murray. “I want our wrestlers to give themselves every chance possible and to take it one match at a time. I want them to go out for the win and enjoy the experience.”
