On Nickelodeon's new animated series Breadwinners, best friends SwaySway and Buhdeuce are ducks that deliver loaves of unusual bread out of their Rocket Van. Creators Steve Borst and Gary "Doodles" Di Raffaele (MAD) came up with the idea behind the carb-loving waterfowl as part of the kids network's new Animation Shorts Program, created to incubate new creator-generated cartoons that could then be turned into series. Nickelodeon liked what it saw and fast-tracked 20 episodes of Breadwinners, which premieres Monday, Feb. 17 at 7:30/6:30c. (The show then moves to Saturdays at 11 a.m./10c starting Feb. 22.) Borst and Raffaele answered our showrunner survey to explain why Breadwinners is the greatest thing since sliced... well, you know.
TV Guide Magazine: I've got room in my life to watch just one more animated show. Tell me why it should be yours. Steve Borst: Our show has talking ducks and quacking ducks and a rika-rika-rocket van and cool music and a planet made entirely of bread and we could go on but it would make your head explode!
TV Guide Magazine: Who should be watching?Gary "Doodles" Di Raffaele: Kids ages 2-99. Also, ducks.
TV Guide Magazine: What happens if we don't watch your show?Di Raffaele: A poor little ducky will lose its wing. You don't want that, now do you? Do you?!?!
TV Guide Magazine: What's the best thing anyone has said or written about your show? Borst: "Quack! Quack! Quack!" -Jenny Quackles
TV Guide Magazine: What's the worst thing? Di Raffaele: "Quack! Quack! Quack!" -Poopers McGee
TV Guide Magazine: Who was right?Borst: Jenny Quackles. Definitely.
TV Guide Magazine: What's an alternate title for your show?Di Raffaele: Avian Carbohydrate Deliverers
TV Guide Magazine: Give us an equation for your show. Borst: Bread + Ducks + More Bread / Magic = Best Baps Forever
TV Guide Magazine: Let's scare the network. Tell us an idea that didn't make it on to the screen.Di Raffaele: We brainstormed an episode called "Take Me To Tooshy Town" where Buhdeuce's butt falls off and runs away to Tooshy Town to become a famous painter.
TV Guide Magazine: Why ducks? Why bread?Borst: Because ducks are fun to draw! And bread is fun to eat!
TV Guide Magazine: How many fart jokes would kids like per show? How many would Nickelodeon like? What's the middle ground? Di Raeffaele: Our crack team of fart experts tells us that kids want 2.4 farts per episodes. Nickelodeon wants at least 80 farts per episode. We compromise by adding barf jokes.
TV Guide Magazine: Pick another show, any show, to start a fake feud with. Borst: No! Breadwinners do not pick fights! (Although sometimes we pick our nose.)
TV Guide Magazine: What other show would you like to do a cross-over episode with - and how would that go?Di Raeffaele: Teenage Mutant Ninja Ducks! Need we say more?!
TV Guide Magazine: Finish this sentence: "If you like [blank], you'll like our show." Borst: If you like ducks-delivering-bread-in-a-rocket-van-on-a-planet-made-entirely-of-made-where-monsters-are-always-trying-to-eat-them, you'll like our show.
