Robert E. Lyons, 81, of Geneseo, died Monday, May 19, 2014, at the Toulon Health Care Center in Toulon. A funeral Mass celebrating his life was held Thursday, May 22 at St. Malachy’s Catholic Church in Geneseo. The Rev. Michael Pakula officiated. Burial was in North Cemetery, Geneseo, where military honors were accorded by the Don Cherry VFW Post No. 5083. A visitation was held Wednesday, May 21 at Vandemore Funeral Home, Geneseo, where a scripture services was held. Memorials may be left to the Geneseo Animal Shelter or Toulon Health Care Center.

Robert was born on Feb. 13, 1933, in Kenia, the son of Hiram and Stacy Leo (Krietsinger) Lyons. He married Frances L. VanVooren on Sept. 14, 1952, at St. Malachy Church, Geneseo. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955, serving in Germany with Battery C of the 42nd Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion. Robert farmed in rural Geneseo for 31 years, starting as a farmhand for the Reschkes and then farming for himself before retiring to town.

Robert belonged to St. Malachy Catholic Church and the Don Cherry VFW Post No. 5083. He loved farming and playing cards. Robert took great pride in taking care of his farm equipment. He enjoyed being with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Frances; daughters, Connie (Gerald Scott) Shaffer of Oshkosh, Wis.; Mary Jo (Scott) Kappelman of Orion; and Cindy (Ken) Reeves of Annawan; four grandchildren, Kristopher and Zachary Shaffer, Dustin (Tiffany) Stees and Brett (Linley) Stees; several step grandchildren; two great grandchildren, Nathan and Gavin and another on the way; one brother, Bud Lyons of Alma and one sister, Joan of Salem. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and one brother.
