Just finished watching yesterday’s World Cup Cyclocross race which was won by Kevin Pauwels in a dramatic last lap acceleration that dropped Lars Van De Haar.  American Jeremy Powers had a great race and finished 16th, which may not sound that great but is actually an awesome accomplishment.  ‘Cross is so big in Belgium, like football in America, a competitor who hasn’t grown up in it starts off a major disadvantage.

One of the biggest stories in ‘Cross right now is Sven Nys, Mr. Cyclocross.  After winning a couple early races his season has fallen apart.  A guy who last year seemed able to win races at will is now not even cracking the top ten.  Sven decided not even to start the World Cup race Sunday.  In a recent interview Nys confirmed that he has no clue what’s wrong with him, he has no acceleration, he’s just riding around the track at a constant tempo.

In local news I got in some good runs last week and a great mountain bike ride yesterday.  My ol’ pal Luke is in town and he brought his fatbike back from Alaska.  Following the fat bike in mud is really neat.  It doesn’t dig down but just kind of floats across the mud.  In a short test ride I was stunned by how effortless it was to ride in and out of a muddy rut.  Despite the ludicrous size of the rims and tires the bike is not heavy, it may be a pound heavier than my bike.  Luke says that he can’t climb nearly as fast on it, but I still can’t keep up with him.
