Gary Melvin Ong, 58, of Phoenix, Ariz., died at 1:27 p.m. Wednesday, May 31, 2017. Gary passed away just nine weeks after receiving a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. A ceremony will be at 10 a.m. July 6 Fairview Cemetery, in Tonica. The Rev. Mark Nowakowski will officiate. Gary will be laid to rest next to his late father, Melvin “Mel” Ong. They were both avid Cubs fans. In lieu of cards or flowers, please direct memorials to the Gary Ong Memorial Fund at Central Bank, 101 N. State St., Geneseo, IL 61254. The memorial will be donated to the Geneseo High School athletic program in honor of Gary. The Hurst Funeral Home, in Tonica, is handing arrangements.

Gary was born May 9, 1959, in Geneseo, the son of Melvin Ong and Barbara (DeBrusselles) Ong. He married Linda Peal in Shreveport, La., on June 12, 1982, and divorced after 25 years. Gary graduated from Geneseo High School in 1977 where he played on the state championship football team. Gary went on to attend the University of Illinois in 1981 and graduated with a bachelor’s in mechanical engineering. Gary worked for West Pharmaceutical Services Inc. in Phoenix for 25 years.

He is survived by his daughter, Katie (Daniel) Parra, of Glendale, Ariz., and two grandchildren, Logan and Rylee. He is also survived by his mother, Barbara Ong, of Oglesby; and two sisters and a brother, Cindy (William) Leach, of McKinney, Texas; Patricia (Bart) Sheffer, of Penrose, Colo.; and Marvin (Marlene) Ong, of Geneseo.
