Aaron L. Hurliman

Rockford - Aaron L. Hurliman, 74, of Rockford, passed away after an extended and courageous battle with esophageal cancer amid the challenges of a pandemic on Wednesday, January 26, 2022 at Serenity Hospice and Home in Oregon, IL. Born May 22, 1947, in Watseka, IL, the son of Louie and Leona (Seggebruch) Hurliman. Aaron grew up in Cissna Park, IL. He was raised in the Lutheran Church. He graduated from Illinois State where he met his future wife, Susan. Aaron married Susan Toppe, on June 30, 1968 in Malta, IL. He was a former teacher in the Byron and DeKalb Schools before joining a career in agriculture. Aaron was Plant Operations Manager at Wyffels Hybrids for 34 years. Upon retiring, he and Susan moved to Rockford, IL and spent time going to his family's cabin in Minnesota. Among many things, Aaron especially loved the outdoors, woodworking, gardening and planted many trees throughout his lifetime.

Those left to cherish his memory include; Susan, his wife of 53 years; sons, Joshua Hurliman (Partner, Susan Anderson) and Jason Hurliman; grandchildren, Franziska, Maximillian, Caroline and Charlotte; sisters, Joan (Paul) Gray and Sandra (Wayne) Gray; sisters-in-law, Virginia Toppe, Marie (Bill) Oelklaus, Carolyn Toppe, Shirley (Jamie) Smith and Michelle (Jim) Busse and brother-in-law Timothy (Gwen); nieces and nephews, Jennifer, Neil, Margie, Sarah, Joanne, Amanda and Garrett. He is also a dear great-uncle to many. He is predeceased by his parents; and seven-month-old brother, Kenneth. Aaron requested there be no service.

His family plans to gather at a later date at one of his favorite outdoor places. In the words of Johnny Appleseed, "The true meaning of life is planting trees under whose shade you do not expect to sit." In lieu of flowers or memorials, the best way to honor Aaron would be to plant a tree. May his memory be a blessing.
