Joshua Aaron Hurliman, 52, of Rockford, passed away on Thursday, May 26, 2022, after a courageous battle with lung cancer. He was born September 8, 1969, in DeKalb, IL, the son of Aaron L. and Susan T. (Toppe) Hurliman. He graduated from J.D. Darnall Senior High School in Geneseo, IL and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, a Cold War warrior stationed in Wildflecken, Germany on the Fulda Gap. While he lived in Frankfort, Germany, he met and married Anette Hurliman (Schweitzer) in 1990, divorced in 2006. Together they had two children, daughter, Franziska and son, Maximillian. At the conclusion of his military service, he earned an Associate’s Degree from Black Hawk College in Moline, IL, and a Bachelor of Science degree from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, IL. Joshua also earned a Master’s degree in Information Systems from Walden University in Minneapolis, MN.
Joshua worked in the Plant IT Support Department at Del Monte Foods in Rochelle and Mendota, IL.
Joshua was licensed as an FAA Drone Operator and small business owner. He was a member of Lake of the Isles Lutheran Church in Minneapolis, MN. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed spending his free time hunting, fishing and recreating with his family at their cabin in northern Minnesota. Joshua was a technology enthusiast and never met a machine he was afraid to operate. He was devoted to his service dog, Jack, who he raised and trained from a puppy.
Those left to cherish his memory include his mother, Susan Toppe Hurliman of Rockford, IL and brother, Jason A. Hurliman, nieces Caroline and Charlotte, Minneapolis, MN; Anette Hurliman, daughter Franziska, granddaughters, Adelina, Amaya and Journee, and son Maximillian. He was the cherished nephew of many aunts and uncles, Virginia Toppe, Mt. Morris, IL; Marie and Bill Oelklaus, Appleton, WI; Carolyn Toppe, Oregon, IL; Shirley and Jamie Smith, Oregon, IL; Tim and Gwen Toppe, Big Lake, MN; Michelle and Jim Busse, St. Louis, MO; Joan and Paul Gray, Chebanse, IL; Sandra and Wayne Gray, Clifton, IL; and one great-uncle, Paul Harvey, Rockford, IL. Joshua was also a dear cousin to many. Joshua is predeceased by his father, Aaron L. Hurliman (January 2022); grandparents Margene and Vernon Toppe, Malta, IL; and Leona and Louie Hurliman, Cissna Park, IL.
Memorial Visitation will be from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 11, 2022 at Fred C. Olson Chapel, 1001 Second Ave., Rockford.
